Breakout star, Leon Lee, has been nominated for the best house music gong in the Sepedi Music Awards (SEMA).
Leon was nominated for his single Malavo and Baile, a song by DJRedCarpert & Cadpdafresh in which he features.
Leon, whose real name is Aaron Makgaba Mawasha, broke into the music industry as lead singer for Jika Boys signed to Kalawa Jazzme known for anthems like Jika, Khumbulekhaya, Belinda and Baby don’t lie to me.
The nominations come as Leon is working on his latest project.
The Soshanguve vocalist is said to have recorded over 200 songs for the project to be released under record label Progressive Records.
The SEMA award nominations were announced at Wolfsrock Lodge in Limpopo on Friday, 24 August.
Mawasha, says that he is honoured and the nomination shows that he is growing name in the industry.
The house category is the most contested at the awards and Mawasha will face stiff competition from other Sepedi house artists like King Monada, Master KG, Mr Lacoste, King Salama and Cutjolicious.
Mawasha says that he has always loved recording in Sepedi and is happy to be nominated with Sepedi house greats.
“Though I have moved from Limpopo to Pretoria, I have stuck to singing in Sepedi because I feel comfortable in my mother tongue. There’s really a gap in the industry, we don’t have too many Sepedi house artists.”
The awards ceremony will be held on 23 September at the University of Limpopo.
