Tshwane choirs are well represented at the historic 2018 world choir games underway in the city.
About 58 choirs from Tshwane are participating in the 11-day event, which will wrap up on Saturday.
This year marks the 10th edition of this prestigious event. It is, however, the first-ever world choir games event to be hosted in Africa.
The event was launched by Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga at the Sun Arena, Times Square Menlyn last week Wednesday.
Mayoral spokesperson Samkelo Mgobozi said the city was determined to make this an “all-embracing African event”.
“The event will boost the profile of Tshwane globally, regionally and locally as a destination of choice, specifically as a city capable of hosting mega-events.”
Tshwane is the country’s diplomatic hub, home to 134 embassies and high commissions – the second largest behind Washington DC.
The world choir games – the largest competition of its kind on the international calendar – are held every two years.
This year, more than 300 choirs from 59 countries are taking part in 500 competition concerts and 50 friendship performances.

The 10th World Choir Games 2018 in South Africa will provide a unique chance for international choirs to get to know and learn to sing fantastic music from this country whose common ground is singing, music and rhythm. A workshop with Michael Joseph Barrett and Tuks Camerata in Riga is a great preview. Early Bird Registration for the World Choir Games 2018 ends on September 15.
