Tshwane mayor booed off stage

A large crowd halted the proceedings at a jobs “lottery” which was scheduled to take place at the Akasia Community Hall on Tuesday afternoon.

The crowd booed Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga when he took to the stage to address them, an hour after proceedings were expected to get underway.

Tensions ran high as they ultimately booed Msimanga out of the community hall.

Msimanga said he left because he feared for the safety of residents as he had received information that people had been bused in to incite violence at the event.

“There are people who have come to cause trouble so that we don’t run the system as we intended,” he said.

Msimanga, metro councillors and selected ward members were at the hall to attend a lottery to select 1 350 people in the area who would benefit from a public works programme.

The selection process was postponed out of safety concerns.

The public works scheme will however go ahead as planned, the metro said.

The Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) is aimed at creating temporary job opportunities in townships across Tshwane.

More than 120 000 people have already applied for the 23 000 jobs it would create.
