Disabled people frustrated with local taxis

The newly formed African Disabled People’s Movement will lead a march to demand action be taken against ‘the appalling local taxis’.

A new political party claims taxis are “moving coffins” and not “friendly” to people living with disabilities.

Therefore, members of the recently formed African Disabled People’s Movement (ADPM) plan to march to the Jakkalas Taxi rank in Winterveldt on Tuesday to demand safer and accessible public transportation.

They will hand over their list of grievances to Tshwane MMC for roads and transport Sheila Lynn Senkubuge at the rank.

The march is expected to kick off at the Robert Ledwaba Complex in Marikana at 09:00,

“We intentionally arranged to meet with the MMC at the taxi rank so that she can see for herself the kind of taxis we are talking about … the state of local taxis is appalling,” said ADPM president William Shibuyane, who is also disabled.

“We expect hundreds of community members, including people without disabilities.”

He said there was no space for wheelchairs in the local taxis; and, if one was in a wheelchair, drivers charged such person for the wheelchair as well.

“Most of the taxis are old, dilapidated and do not have road permits,” he said.

Shibuyane said taxi drivers were rude and arrogant towards people with disabilities.

He said this was one of the reasons he recently decided to form his own political party to protect the rights of disabled people.

“There is a definite need for more public transport facilities that cater for people living with physical disabilities,” he said.
