Illegal dumping raises stink in the north

One of the illegal dumping sites in Soshanguve block h, near Khensani Primary School.

Despite Tshwane metro’s efforts, Soshanguve residents continue to dump waste illegally.

Various measures have been put in place to try and stamp out illegal dumping.

This includes the introduction of expanded public works programme (EPWP) initiatives and waste collection every week.

EPWP employee Charly Msibi told Rekord that workers tried their best to clean illegal dumping sites regularly, but lack of resources hindered their work.

“There are not enough municipal trucks to collect the waste after we have cleaned,” said Msibi.

“We clean and put the waste in plastic bags, but the bags remain uncollected and more waste gets added on top of them.”

He said illegal dumping was not only affecting community members, but the environment as well.

Resident Elisa Makondo said: “Tyres, plastic bags, discarded furniture and soiled nappies pile up every day.

“The problem started when Tshwane metro did not collect waste. By the time they came, many residents had dumped waste illegally.”

Some residents said illegal dumping sites were affecting their businesses.

Rethabile Mohlolo (35) owns a mini kitchen business in block H.

He said dumping sites were a threat to his business and some customers ended up leaving because of the smell.

“This waste really has a negative impact on my business … when there is wind, it blows papers to my place and the smell becomes unbearable as there are also dead animals on the waste heap.”

There was no response from the municipality at the time of going to print.
