UPDATE: Mooinooi killer suspects back in court next week

The case against eight suspected Mooinooi couple killers is set to continue next week.

The state is alleging that the suspects kidnapped, robbed, raped and killed Joey van Niekerk (32) and Anisha van Niekerk (30) last year.

The suspects are facing charges of robbery, murder, kidnapping, rape, unlawful possession of firearms and defeating the ends of justice.

The married couple went missing on 10 December. They were supposed to travel to Pretoria to finalise arrangements for the funeral of Joey’s father.

Their burnt-out vehicle was found on 16 December in Magaliesburg.

On 28 December, what was believed to be their burnt remains were discovered in a bush in Buffelsfontein, near Mooinooi.

The eight appeared on 1 February and the case was postponed to 16 February.

“The case was remanded to 16 February for further investigations,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mpeile Talane.

He said they were still awaiting DNA testing results to confirm whether the remains found were indeed those of the couple.
