Teary-eyed parents waved goodbye as new grade 1 learners rushed off to their classrooms on Wednesday morning.

Hundreds of grade 1 and grade R learners started school in the north of Pretoria this week.

Teachers had their hands full with new arrivals while parents had their arms full with books, backpacks and stationery for the young ones.

Doornpoort Primary School, established in 2011, saw an increase of learners and welcomed 160 grade 1 learners at the growing school.

Most learners settled in quickly in their classrooms, while others clung to their parents.

“We were well prepared for school,” said Ncomeka Xuma, mother of Yandisa.

“I have another child in Grade 6, so we know the drill.”

More parents agreed that it was easier bringing their kids back to schools where they have completed Grade R.
