Man in Temba magistrate’s court over stun grenade, ammo

Arrested for possession of explosives, Benson Ngozo

A 32-year-old man, who was arrested for the illegal possession of an explosive device in Hammanskraal, was denied bail after appearing in court.

Benson Ngozo was remanded in custody when he appeared in Temba magistrate’s court on Thursday, said police spokesperson Captain Sarah Lesabane.

“The date for his next appearance is still to be determined by the court,” said Lesabane.

Ngozo was arrested on 28 December by Temba police detectives following up on a tip-off.

Ngozo was arrested together with two other men – Philip Mataboge (38) and Keabetswe Maseng (29) – who were allegedly found in possession of two 9mm pistols, one unlicensed and the other with a filed-off serial number, 16 rounds of 9mm pistol and a stun grenade.

Lesabane said it was not clear what the suspect was going to do with the explosive device, but police are investigating.

Mataboge and Maseng were both released on bail on R1 000 each.
