GRAPHIC IMAGES: 4 donkeys electrocuted in the North

Four donkeys were killed in a freak accident in Klipgat, north of Pretoria, after they walked into exposed electric cables and got electrocuted.

The donkeys were pulling a cart loaded with sand on Wednesday when the incident happened, said SPCA inspector Mishack Matlou.

“The donkeys were five in total. Four of them died at the scene after touching illegally connected electric cables crossing a street. The one donkey that did not touch the wire escaped unharmed,” said Matlou.

Four of them died at the scene after touching illegally connected electric cables crossing a street. One donkey that had not yet touched the wire escaped unharmed, the SPCA said.

Matlou said he was contacted by the owner of the donkeys who asked him to urgently rush to the scene and assist him.

“The SPCA is very much concerned about the illegally connected wires that run across the streets in the communities. These uncovered cables are a danger not only to animals but to people too,” he said.

Police were contacted, but it was not possible for them to arrest anyone since there are too many cables going in different directions.

He said this was not the first incident they had involving animals that were electrocuted.

“We are concerned about the cruel manner in which the animals died. We had an incident in which two goats were electrocuted along Soutpan Road in Soshanguve. In another incident three donkeys were electrocuted in Stinkwater due to izinyoka (illegal electricity connectors),” he said.
