Mooinooi police have confirmed they are looking for Mercia Witney van Rooi (21) in connection with the disappearance of Joey (32) and Anisha (30) van Niekerk.
A reward of R5 000 has been offered by the family for any information that could lead to her apprehension.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mpeile Talane said that Van Rooi is not a suspect, but that she might have information regarding the disappearance of the two women. Van Rooi is reported to be the fiancé of Koos Strydom (53), one of the suspects in custody.
The two women were on their way to the city to attend Joey’s father’s funeral when they went missing.
Earlier this week, Talane confirmed that seven suspects had been arrested: Strydom, Aaron Sithole (23), Alex Mudau (36), Moses Rakubu (33), Vincent Strydom (29), Maruschka Opperman (18) and Jack Mokotedi. Mokotedi initially claimed to be a minor, but the state prosecutor has since confirmed that he is of age.
The suspects appeared in the Brits Magistrate’s Court last week, facing charges including murder, rape, kidnapping, robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm and defeating the ends of justice.
Last week, police confirmed what could be the remains of the couple were found after bones were discovered in a bushy area in Buffelsfontein, just outside of Mooinooi. They are awaiting the results of DNA testing.
The couple’s burnt vehicle was found on 16 December in the Magaliesburg area.
