Police and community members of Akasia joined forces last month to clean up a field that had become a haven for criminals in the area.

Amandasig action group (AAG), the local community policing forum, teamed up with police and Tshwane metro to clear the field, in Doreg Street, of illegal shelters and waste.

AAG spokesperson Tracy Schoeman said drug abuse and even prostitution were some of the crimes regularly reported from this area.

“Many people have been robbed and even attacked near this veld,” said Schoeman.

“It is being used as a hideout for thieves and drug dealers.”

She said evidence of drug abuse was found during the clean-up campaign.

“Self-made shelters and caves were removed, numerous shrubs and trees were trimmed and rubbish removed.”

Schoeman said heaps of needles, syringes, adhesive glue tins and foil straws were also safely removed and discarded.

“The AAG urges the residents in Akasia and surrounding communities to be careful and not use the veld as a shortcut to go to the stores,” said Schoeman.

“The clean-up project already made a considerable difference and we, as members of the AAG, have taken it upon ourselves to keep our area safe and will be doing similar projects in the future.”

Schoeman thanked Akasia police, metro, city representatives and sector 2 CPF.

“A special thanks to Constable Rambau from the social crime unit as well as Martha Molekane, chairperson of the CPF.”
