UPDATE: Probe after three metro officers robbed of their guns

The robbers attacked the officers, and took their service pistols at gunpoint.

An investigation has been launched after three Tshwane metro police were robbed of their service pistols in Mabopane on Saturday night.

Metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said together with the SAPS, they were hot on the heels of the two men who robbed the three officers in Block X.

“Three officers were robbed on Saturday night around 20:00 while on duty,” said Mahamba.

He said the officers were deployed at the revenue service for static crime prevention purpose.

“It is alleged that two unknown men between the ages of 25 and 30 cut through a fence to gain access to the building,” he said.

The men attacked the officers and took their service pistols at gunpoint.

“They fled the scene in a maroon Avanza with an unknown number plate,” said Mahamba.

The officers were not injured during the incident.

Mahamba appealed to residents with information that could assist the investigation to contact TMPD at 012 358 7095/6 or report such information to their nearest police station.

He said the department was arranging counselling for the officers.

“A case of robbery is under investigation,” he said.
