ADVERTORIAL: Selecting a reputable security company – don’t be duped

Of the 9 000 security companies operating in South Africa, employing around 500 000 officers, it is estimated that 80% are non-compliant with security industry standards.

“This is why it is so important to properly interrogate any potential private security service provider, before placing your trust in them,” says Phillip Uys, district community development manager of Fidelity ADT. “Asking the right questions will go a long way to ensuring your peace of mind.”

Uys suggests that questions should be asked about the candidate company’s standing with the industry’s regulatory bodies, the number of patrol vehicles that will service the area, formal training and preparedness of its officers and safety measures such as armour plated vehicles and Kevlar helmets and vests for armed response staff.

“You cannot simply compare companies on the monthly tariffs they charge,” says Uys. “The safety of your loved ones cannot be dependent solely on financial cost considerations but rather on a careful comparison of a wide range of factors.”

Some factors to consider include how long the company has been in business and whether security is its primary business; how many armed response officers are deployed in your area; what is the level of training they have received and are the staff paid according to industry regulations. “It’s also important to find out what safety and protective items are they given while they carry out their duties and whether the company is registered with all the appropriate industry and labour regulatory agencies, such as the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA).”

Uys also recommends asking about value-added services that the company offers. “24-hour emergency medical response and a free panic system are two value adds Fidelity ADT offers along with a link-up at no charge, an auto-dispatching system that improves critical response times and a no-obligation risk assessment of your property. It’s really worth finding out what is included in your package so you can make the most of your security investment.”

Technology and innovation are also key aspects of security today so finding out what the provider can offer is also important. “CCTV technology, for example, has evolved in a big way over the last few years and is now an affordable option for homeowners. Make sure you find the security provider that has the knowledge and expertise to implement the right technology solution for you,” he says.

“If you ask the right questions and do your homework today, you should be able to sleep assured tonight that you have appointed the best company to come to your aid when an emergency happens,” concludes Uys.
