Gauteng SASSA spokesperson, Nandi Mosia, confirmed they were aware of the matter.

“SASSA is aware of the matter,” Mosia said. “We urge all beneficiaries, especially those around the Soshanguve area, to refrain from requesting assistance from strangers to count their money upon payment.”

She also advised people who were handed counterfeit money to go to the police first to avoid committing a criminal offence – being found in possession of fake bank notes – before returning to SASSA to lodge a complaint.

At least five similar cases from the same area are under investigation since the beginning of the year.
