Hammanskraal learners urged to return textbooks, tablets in good condition

Gauteng MEC for education Panyaza Lesufi has pleaded with learners to return the textbooks and tablets they were given at the beginning of the academic year.

Gauteng MEC for education Panyaza Lesufi has pleaded with learners to return the textbooks and tablets they were given at the beginning of the academic year to their schools.

Lesufi was speaking to learners at the launch of the Retrieval of textbooks and tablets campaign at Sebothoma Hall in Hammanskraal on Tuesday.

“This will enable other learners to be afforded the same opportunity in the next academic year,” said Lesufi.

Hundreds of learners from various schools in Hammanskraal attended the launch.

“The purpose of this campaign is to instil discipline and a sense of responsibility among the learners regarding adequate management and care of the department’s resources,” said Lesufi.

He said the safe return of study material enabled the department to plan on time for 2018 so that when schools reopen for the new academic year, learning and teaching could commence without delay.

“In addition, this will save the taxpayers’ money, which can be redirected to other educational purposes such as the implementation of the department’s information communication technology (ICT) strategy, rather than procurement,” he said.

He said it was therefore vital that textbooks and tablets be returned to the schools after final exams as this impacted on access to quality education in South Africa as a whole.

“We also implore parents to play a pivotal role in reminding their children that withholding the department’s learning material is tantamount to theft and they are likely to be prosecuted,” he added.
