A fire spreading rapidly through a veld in Montana in the north of Pretoria on Tuesday afternoon, destroyed nearly everything in its wake.

Emergency services worked feverishly to extinguish the blaze by 15: 30.

The Sinoville Firefighters Association and the metro’s fire brigade responded to the fire between Sefako Makgatho (Zambesi) Drive and Rooibos Road around 14:00.

“It seemed the fire started near Zambesi Drive,” said association chairman JP Botha.

“The fire spread quickly in a western direction, destroying nearly everything in its wake.”

This included a pen for livestock where horses and other animals were kept.

“Luckily, the animals escaped unscathed.”

There were also no injuries reported.

The fire also reached a lapa in Rooibos Road.

“We responded in time to save the lapa,” said Botha.

Zenobia Loock-Du Plessis from the firefighters association warned of an “extreme fire danger” brought on by the hot dry weather.

“Open fires spread quickly and we urge residents to please be careful.”
