Man appears in court for tavern killing

Constable Piet Sethunyane returns the accused to the cells after the case was postponed to next Monday.

A man (20) has appeared in in the Moretele Magistrate’s Court, Hammanskraal, on Monday for allegedly stabbing another man (19) to death at a tavern in Stinkwater.

Athini Mlisa had handed himself over to the Temba police on Friday after being on the run for almost a week.

Police spokesperson Captain Sarah Lesabane said Mlisa had been on the run since Sunday 3 September.

“Police were called to a murder scene at Stinkwater Mokone block Basement tavern in the early hours of 3 September. When we arrived we found a male aged 19 lying on the ground in a pool of blood. He had been stabbed with a sharp object in the upper body,” said Lesabane.

Ofentse Phiri was confirmed dead on the scene by Emergency Medical Services.

Mlisa was remanded in custody and would appear in court again on 18 September for his application.
