SPAR Women’s Challenge supports everyday heroes

In the spirit of this year’s SPAR Women’s Challenge race theme, #BetterTogether, SPAR North Rand showed their support of Joe Black’s ‘Be That Guy: Everyday Heroes’ organisation with a R50 000 donation handed over at this year’s race launch event.

BTG Everyday Heroes put SPAR’s donation to good use and hosted a youth adventure camp from 1-3 July 2017 in Parys in conjunction with Geared 4 Life. The camp was held with the objectives of teaching valuable life skills, team building and leadership with the purpose of equipping young leaders and empowering youth to reach their full potential.

“The camps we hold are the medium from which we instil positive core values in the children’s lives. Children are spending less time outdoors these days, and are more attached to screen time than ever because of games, social media etc. More often than not, spending most of their free time affixed to virtual reality, has a negative psychological impact and as a result our children are losing the value of what the outdoors has to offer,” says Demetrius Symeonides, Managing Director of BTG Everyday Heroes.

Symeonides went on to say that the camps try to awaken a passion for adventure and outdoor sports by teaching skills such as fishing, hiking, abseiling, river rafting and more. The camp was completely successful with amazing feedback from both the boys who attended and their parents who said that following the camp, they saw a noticeable change in behaviour.

He also stated that it is through sponsors like SPAR that they are able to make an impact on today’s youth.

“It really is a group effort which is where the Better Together message becomes so relevant. This ethos is something that we at BTG Everyday Heroes live by and so we could not have asked for a better partner than SPAR North Rand,” said Symeonides.

“Thanks to them, the boys went home from the camp with a new perspective of who they are, their role in society and how much they can positively influence the world around them. They are more aware of their responsibility to be good role models to their peers and how to work together to build people up. This is how the Better Together message filters down. We are thrilled to have had SPAR North Rand as a partner and hope to work with them again in future,” Symeonides concluded.

BTG Everyday Heroes is partnered with Geared 4 Life and are both non-profit organizations, focused on youth development. To find out more or get involved with BTG Everyday Heroes and Geared 4 Life, call 072 096 9830, email [email protected] or follow them on Facebook at
