Paramedic killed during armed robbery

Police are searching for two robbers who shot and killed a paramedic in Mabopane at the weekend.

Captain Kay Makhubela said an on duty Gauteng Emergency Medical Service employee was shot during a robbery on Saturday.

“The victim and his crew decided to stop and get something to eat at a tuck shop when they were held up at gunpoint by two men demanding cash and cellphones,” said Makhubela.

Makhubele said a shot was fired and the driver was hit in the upper body.

The crew ran away but later returned to the scene and took the victim to Akasia medi clinic, he said.

On Saturday, EMS issued a statement that their employees had been attacked.

“At about 19:45, our four employees from Gauteng Emergency Medical Services based in Odi EMS – Tshwane district were robbed and one of them was shot in the abdomen.”

EMS confirmed the medic was taken to hospital but said he succumbed to his injuries the next day.

“The other affected officials are undergoing post traumatic stress counselling,” said EMS.

“Our condolences to all those affected by this terrible and unfortunate event.”
