Bigger and better Tshwane 10s on the way

One of South Africa’s most popular sports and lifestyle events hits Pretoria on 25 and 26 August when the festive Zando Tshwane 10s will be back for the second year.

The organizers already promised that this year’s event will be even bigger and better than last year’s inaugural Tshwane 10s.

Known as the Social Olympics, the Zando Tshwane 10s sees 150 teams contest seven sports codes over two days at the Harlequins Rugby Club in Pretoria.

While the rugby headlines the event, teams will also be competing in netball, beach volleyball, touch rugby, five-a-side soccer, lawn bowls and dodgeball. The Zando Tshwane 10s caters for all sports lovers – from the legends and professionals to the social squads. There will be something for everyone.

Everyone can join in the fun as a participant or spectator. Festivities include thrilling sports action and great bands. Who knows, you may just bump into your favourite celebrities, musos or sports stars in the massive beer tent.

Be sure to look out for rugby legends like former Springbok captain Bob Skinstad and head coach of the Stormers, Robbie Fleck, as well as Derek Hougaard, Akona Ndungane, Danie Coetzee, Ethienne Reynecke and Gcobani Bobo. Another popular figure taking part in the rugby tournament is South African Ultimate Fighting Championship’s Garreth “Soldierboy” McClellan.

The divisions are designed to cater for all levels, from the premier leagues to the most social of sports teams.

For the first year, a Women’s Rugby League will join in the contest, with Springbok, provincial and University of Pretoria players taking to the field.

“It’s time for women’s rugby to step into the spotlight,” said TuksWomensRugby team captain Scherren Long.

Adding to the vibe, the Tukkies crowd will be well represented. Each residence is entering at least one team into one of the Zando Tshwane 10s events, with some residences entering five teams.

The inaugural Zando Tshwane 10s was held in 2016 and saw some 40 rugby teams, 30 beach volleyball teams, 20 netball teams and more than 15 dodgeball teams taking part.

The 10s Series, which began in Cape Town a decade ago, is the brainchild of Skinstad, Fleck and friend Ron Rutland.

“We’re delighted by the success of the 10s brand and would like to thank everyone for their continued support. It’s our 10th year of 10s and it’s time to celebrate and there’s no better place that the beautiful capital city of Tshwane,” said Skinstad.

The Zando Tshwane 10s is sponsored by Africa’s largest online fashion store, zando.co.za.

“The growth of 10s over the last few years into Africa’s premier sports and lifestyle event reflects our ambitions as a business and the association with an event that puts the consumer first is at the core of Zando’s values,” said Zando’s managing director, Grant Brown.
