The family of a Winterveldt woman who went missing, leaving a five-week-old baby behind earlier this year, is taking strain.

Cecilia Matlou (41), of 1698 Beirut in Winterveldt, was last seen on Saturday, 4 February.

She was also a mother to three other children aged 18, 14, and 3 years old.

Cecilia’s mother, Angelina, said the family was strained and at pains trying to understand where she might have gone or what could have happened to her.

“We are so nervous and troubled. We do not sleep well at night not knowing what has happened to her,” said Angelina, adding that the little boy was now 6 months old.

Cecilia’s disappearance came at a time when violence against women was in the spotlight after several femicides and abductions took place around the country.

Angelina said the last time she saw her daughter was around 03:00 that Saturday.

“She was sleeping when I last saw her,” said Angelina.

“Later that morning we woke up to find she was not at home and had left the baby behind.”

Angelina said the family had searched everywhere, including at relatives’ homes.

“She has tried to take her life before, we are very distraught.” But the family remained hopeful Cecilia was alive, despite her suicidal tendencies.

Angelina said Cecilia was so weak from child-birth that she was not in any condition to travel.

“We appeal to residents who might know her whereabouts to help us,” she said.

Police said this week they were following up all leads.

Anyone with information can contact Angelina on 084 742 9586, Warrant Officer Phatshwane on 073 062 1018, or Loate SAPS on 012 797 7800.
